The Porter families covered in this blog are focussed in the Parishes of Standish, Croston, Leyland in Lancashire and Slaidburn, Whitewell (Whalley) in the West Riding of Yorkshire, and environs. The families researched covered the period 1565 to 1800. More parishes will be added to the blog with information and names will be included in Porter Name Database (see link in right hand column) with sources.

Great photos of the area where our Porters lived. Thomas and Alice (Langton) Porter and the majority of their children moved from Ulnes Walton, Lancashire to the Whitewell area between 1794 and 1796. Alice was born at Wardley, Whitewell, Yorkshire. She and Thomas were married in 1784 in Whitewell, then returned to Ulnes Walton, Lancashire, where Thomas operated a smithy and farmed. Not sure why Thomas was in Whitewell, perhaps looking for opportunities. However, they moved lock, stock and barrel to Forest of Bowland where they and their children established themselves in the area at Hey Farm, Higher Whitewell Farm, Park Gate, Hodder Bank Farm. Whitewell Inn was also under the management of one of the family. Enjoy the photos.

Love Whitewell. It is a 15 minute car journey away. Loads of my ancestors came from there. Been to a couple of weddings at The Inn at Whitewell and it's a great place to pop into for a drink or meal.
